5 Tips To Elevate Your Holiday Decor

If you know me, then it should come as no surprise that aesthetic is pretty high on my priority list! Whether it’s my personal style or my home decor, it’s safe to say I have a very specific vision for how I like things to look, and I truly enjoy the process of making that vision come to life. I may not be the world’s best cook, but I can sure style a space and put together an outfit! Know your strengths, people!

When the holidays roll around, you know I don’t just opt for the obvious reds, greens, and over-the-top sparkle of it all. I respect and acknowledge the joy that comes with traditional Christmas vibes, but in my home, I like to do things differently. What can I say, I have a brand to uphold!

So, I thought I’d share some simple and effective ways to take your holiday decor to the next level. In my opinion, every holiday and occasion can be chic with the right amount of taste and effort, and it truly doesn’t have to be an expensive operation. In fact, it could even save you a few bucks.

Let’s dive right in!

Real VS Artificial Foliage

I recommend keeping your foliage real; whether you’re hanging a wreath or layering a garland over the fireplace, it’s always going to look less cheesy if you use the real thing. Plus, having real foliage allows you to support your local farmers and is a far more sustainable option.

However, if you’re going to go artificial, I recommend splurging on prelight decor. I personally love this wreath and this garland.

Though I haven't committed to a tree until we move to our more permanent house, I'm coveting this one. It's a big investment, but if you divide the price by the number of years that you will likely have it actually saves you money, unless you love the tradition of getting a real tree with the family every year.

Dark Tones

Instead of Santa-themed-everything, try incorporating darker tones that last all fall and winter. I’m talking touches of browns, burgundies, and coppers in your holiday accessorizing. I personally love Parachute for these kinds of things! You can also pull out your heavier knit blankets and velvet throw pillows. I’m also really into these velvet ornaments; how chic are they?

Baskets > Tree Skirts
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Christmas tree skirts. No matter how hard you try, they always look a bit janky. Instead, I would opt for a basket that you can use year-round to hide your tree stand. Yet another sustainable option that doesn’t result in post-holiday landfill build-up!

Neutral Ornaments > Bright Colors

When it comes to decorating the tree and mantel, I opt for neutral tones mixed with white creams and a touch of copper/gold rather than bold reds and greens. As for stockings, I’m high-key obsessed with these ones I found on Etsy. If you’re looking for a simple and neutral tree, I am digging this one here.

Simple Accents > Festive Florals

Trade your florals for bare branches in a stunning vase and play up the mood with some taper candles from Food52. You can use the code brandyjoysmith for a discount on these bad boys!

I promise that incorporating some or all of these tips will really take your holiday vibe up a notch! Not only will your guests be wowed when you’re hosting a festive gathering, but you can also enjoy the entire month of December in a stylish holiday environment instead of feeling like you’re living at the North Pole with Santa himself.
